Pengantar Materi

Functional text is practical, everyday writing designed to provide specific information, instructions, or, in the case of short functional texts, convey quick messages like, announcements, memos, advertisements, labels, or signs. These texts are generally short, clear, and easy to understand, aimed at helping the reader accomplish a task, such as following a warning or invitation.

Short Written Notifications

This chapter covers written messages used to inform, invite, or alert others about specific events or rules.

1 Greeting Cards

Greeting cards are used to express personal sentiments, congratulations, or sympathy.

  • Purpose: To celebrate an achievement, show empathy, or maintain social relationships.
  • Structure:
    • Receiver: Who the card is for.
    • Body: The main message (e.g., “Happy Birthday,” “Get Well Soon”).
    • Sender: Who the card is from.
  • Common Phrases: “I’m so proud of you!”, “Wishing you a speedy recovery,” or “Heartfelt condolences.”
2 Notices and Announcements

While similar, notices are usually brief instructions or warnings, whereas announcements provide information about an upcoming event.

  • Notices: Often found in public places to regulate behavior (e.g., “No Smoking,” “Keep Off the Grass”).
  • Announcements: Contain details like What, Where, When, and Who (e.g., school meeting schedules or flight delays).
  • Key Features: Use of bold fonts, clear headings, and concise language to ensure the reader understands the message immediately.
3 Invitations

Invitations are formal or informal requests for someone’s presence at an event.

  • Types: Formal (weddings, graduations) and Informal (birthday parties, dinner).
  • Essential Components:
    • The host’s name.
    • The type of event.
    • Date, time, and venue.
    • RSVP: A request for the guest to confirm their attendance.

Spoken and Written Interactions

This chapter focuses on functional language used to navigate social situations and physical environments.

1 Asking for and Giving Directions

This skill is vital for navigating new places and helping others find their way.

  • Asking: Use polite modal verbs like “Could you tell me…?” or “Excuse me, how do I get to…?”
  • Giving: Use imperative verbs and landmarks:
    • “Go straight until you see the pharmacy.”
    • “Turn left at the intersection.”
    • “It’s located next to the post office.”
2 Apologizing and Making Requests

Politeness is the core of these functional interactions.

  • Apologizing: * Informal: “I’m sorry I’m late.”
    • Formal: “Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.”
    • Response: “That’s alright,” or “No problem.”
  • Making Requests:
    • Use “Can,” “Could,” or “Would” to make requests less demanding.
    • Example: “Would you mind closing the window?” or “Could you pass me the salt, please?”

Personal Expression

This chapter focuses on how to share your internal thoughts and choices with others.

1 Expressing Opinions

An opinion is a personal belief or view about a particular topic.

  • Phrases to use: * “In my opinion…”
    • “I personally feel that…”
    • “As far as I’m concerned…”
  • Agreement/Disagreement: It is equally important to know how to respond to others’ opinions politely using phrases like “I see your point, but…” or “I couldn’t agree more.”
2 Expressing Preferences

Preferences are used to indicate what we like more than something else.

  • Grammar Patterns:
    • Prefer: “I prefer tea to coffee.”
    • Would rather: “I would rather stay home than go out tonight.”
    • Like better: “I like the blue dress better than the red one.”
