Pengantar Materi

Functional Texts are specific types of written texts intended to convey a particular message, provide information, or persuade the reader in a concise manner. They are “functional” because they help us perform daily tasks or fulfill social obligations.
This guide will break down the four types of texts mentioned in your curriculum: Invitation, Announcement, Advertisement, and Personal Letter.

Social & Event-Based Texts

This chapter covers texts used to manage social interactions, invite people to gatherings, or maintain personal relationships.

1 Invitation (Formal & Informal)

An Invitation is a text used to request the presence of a person or group at a specific event, such as a wedding, birthday party, graduation, or meeting.

  • Social Function (Purpose): To invite or request someone’s attendance at an event.
  • Generic Structure (Common Parts):
    1. Invitee: The name of the person being invited.
    2. Occasion/Event: What kind of event it is (e.g., “A Birthday Bash,” “Annual General Meeting”).
    3. Day, Date, and Time: Specific details of when the event occurs.
    4. Venue/Place: Where the event is located.
    5. RSVP: Instructions on how to confirm attendance (usually a phone number or email and a deadline).
    6. Inviter/Sender: The name of the person or organization hosting the event.
  • Language Features:
    • Uses polite and persuasive language (e.g., “Would you like to come?”, “Please join us”).
    • Simple and precise time and date expressions.
  • Example:

Please join us to celebrate the 17th birthday of Sarah Johnson! Saturday, October 12th, at 7:00 PM. At the Moonlight Café. RSVP to Mike at 0812-345-678 by Oct 5th.

2 Personal Letter

A Personal Letter is an informal written message sent from one individual to another (usually friends, family members, or acquaintances) to share personal news, express feelings, or maintain contact.

  • Social Function (Purpose): To strengthen personal relationships, share experiences, give advice, or say thank you informally.
  • Generic Structure (Common Parts):
    1. Date & Address: When and where the letter was written.
    2. Salutation/Greeting: An informal opening (e.g., “Dear Mom,” “Dearest Rina”).
    3. Introduction: A friendly opening phrase (e.g., “How are you doing?”, “I hope this letter finds you well”).
    4. Body of Letter: The main content—sharing news, stories, or asking questions.
    5. Closure/Pre-Closing: Winding down the letter (e.g., “I have to go now,” “Write back soon”).
    6. Complimentary Close: An informal sign-off (e.g., “Love,”, “Warm regards,”, “Your best friend,”).
    7. Signature/Name: The sender’s signature and/or typed name.
  • Language Features:
    • Informal, conversational tone.
    • Use of contractions (e.g., “I’m,” “can’t”) and slang or personal references.
    • Active voice and subjective opinions.

Public Informational Texts

This chapter focuses on texts meant for a wider audience, providing official information or promoting products and services.

1 Announcement

An Announcement is a formal public statement designed to inform a specific group of people about an event, a change, or a fact. It is usually short, clear, and easy to understand.

  • Social Function (Purpose): To give public notice or information about something that has happened or is going to happen (e.g., a school closure, a new policy, a job opening, or a lost object).
  • Generic Structure (Common Parts):
    1. Title/Type of Event: Clearly states what the announcement is about (e.g., “SCHOOL HOLIDAY NOTICE,” “LOST DOG”).
    2. Date, Time, and Place: (If applicable) When and where an event or action will take place.
    3. Body/Details: Precise information, instructions, or descriptions of the topic.
    4. Contact Person/Sender: Who is issuing the announcement and who to contact for more info.
  • Language Features:
    • Formal and impersonal tone.
    • Concise, direct language with no unnecessary words.
    • Common use of the Future Tense (as it often concerns upcoming events).
  • Example:

ATTENTION, STUDENTS! Our school will be closed on Friday, November 1st, due to teacher professional development. Regular classes will resume on Monday. – Principal Davies.

2 Advertisement

An Advertisement (or Ad) is a public notice created to promote a product, service, event, or job vacancy to persuade people to take a specific action (usually buying or using something).

  • Social Function (Purpose): To promote something and persuade or encourage consumers to purchase a product, use a service, or attend an event.
  • Generic Structure (Common Parts):
    1. Headline/Product Name: A catchy title designed to grab attention (e.g., “NEW! The SuperPhone X”).
    2. Visual Elements: Pictures, logos, or striking design (not text, but crucial to an ad).
    3. Body/Key Features: Highlights the benefits, functions, special qualities, or “selling points” (e.g., “Long-lasting battery,” “Fast processor”).
    4. Price/Offer: (Often included) The cost or a special discount/promotion.
    5. Call to Action (CTA)/Contact Info: Tells the reader what to do next (e.g., “BUY NOW!”, “VISIT OUR WEBSITE!”, “CALL 1-800-ADVERT”).
  • Language Features:
    • Highly persuasive language, including strong adjectives (e.g., “best,” “revolutionary,” “affordable”).
    • Uses simple, imperative sentences (“Try it today!”, “Don’t miss out!”).
    • Often uses sensory details or emotional appeals.
