Pengantar Materi

Basic English tenses consist of 12 forms, categorized by time (Past, Present, Future) and aspect (Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous). These tenses are used to indicate when an action occurs—past, present, or future—as well as its duration or completion. The three primary tenses most commonly used are Simple Present, Simple Past, and Simple Future.

Tenses are the tools we use to express time in the English language. They indicate when an action happened—whether it is a habitual fact, an ongoing event, a completed past action, or a future intention.

The Present Simple Tense

The Present Simple is used to describe habits, unchanging situations, general truths, and fixed arrangements.

1 Usage and Context
  • Habitual Actions: Actions that happen repeatedly (e.g., “I drink coffee every morning”).
  • General Truths: Facts that are always true (e.g., “The sun rises in the east”).
2 Sentence Patterns

To form this tense, we use the base form of the verb. For third-person singular subjects (He, She, It), we add -s or -es to the verb.

  • Positive (+): Subject + Verb 1 (+ s/es) + Object.
    • Example: “She plays the piano.”
  • Negative (-): Subject + do/does + not + Verb 1 + Object.
    • Example: “She does not play the piano.”
  • Interrogative (?): Do/Does + Subject + Verb 1 + Object?
    • Example: “Does she play the piano?”

The Present Continuous Tense

This tense describes actions happening right now or temporary situations that are currently in progress.

1 Usage and Context
  • Current Actions: Things happening at the exact moment of speaking.
  • Temporary Trends: Situations that are true for a short period (e.g., “He is staying with us this week”).
2 Sentence Patterns

This tense requires the auxiliary verb to be (am, is, are) and the -ing form of the main verb.

  • Positive (+): Subject + am/is/are + Verb-ing.
    • Example: “They are watching a movie.”
  • Negative (-): Subject + am/is/are + not + Verb-ing.
    • Example: “They are not watching a movie.”
  • Interrogative (?): Am/Is/Are + Subject + Verb-ing?
    • Example: “Are they watching a movie?”

The Past Simple Tense

The Past Simple is used for actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past.

1 Usage and Context
  • Completed Actions: Actions that are over (e.g., “I saw a movie yesterday”).
  • Past Habits: Things that used to be true but are no longer true.
2 Sentence Patterns

Regular verbs take the -ed ending, while irregular verbs have unique forms (e.g., go becomes went).

  • Positive (+): Subject + Verb 2 + Object.
    • Example: “He visited Jakarta last year.”
  • Negative (-): Subject + did + not + Verb 1 + Object.
    • Example: “He did not visit Jakarta last year.”
  • Interrogative (?): Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object?
    • Example: “Did he visit Jakarta last year?”

The Future Tense (Simple Future)

The Future Tense is used to talk about actions that will happen after the present moment.

1 Usage and Context
  • Predictions: Guesses about the future (e.g., “It will rain tomorrow”).
  • Spontaneous Decisions: Deciding to do something at the moment of speaking (e.g., “I will help you with that”).
2 Sentence Patterns

The most common way to form the future is by using the modal verb will.

  • Positive (+): Subject + will + Verb 1 + Object.
    • Example: “We will arrive at 7 PM.”
  • Negative (-): Subject + will + not + Verb 1 + Object.
    • Example: “We will not arrive at 7 PM.”
  • Interrogative (?): Will + Subject + Verb 1 + Object?
    • Example: “Will we arrive at 7 PM?”

Soal Essay

  1. A journalist is writing a long investigative article describing how a scientific discovery evolved over several decades. In the narrative, the journalist must describe:
  • general truths about science,

  • experiments that occurred in the past,

  • actions currently happening in modern laboratories, and

  • predictions about future technological applications.

Explain how the journalist should strategically use Present Simple, Present Continuous, Past Simple, and Future Tense within the article. Provide detailed explanations and construct complex example sentences for each tense.

2. Imagine a historian recounting the events of an ancient civilization that once flourished but eventually declined. Discuss how the Past Simple Tense can be used to narrate the sequence of historical events clearly. In your explanation, analyze how irregular verbs and time expressions contribute to the clarity and credibility of historical narration.

3. In modern journalism and academic writing, the Present Simple Tense is often used to describe general truths, established theories, or widely accepted facts. Analyze why this tense is preferred in such contexts. Then construct several sophisticated example sentences illustrating how scholars might use the Present Simple when explaining scientific or philosophical concepts.

4. Suppose a university professor is describing an experiment that is currently taking place in the laboratory during a lecture. Explain how the Present Continuous Tense helps emphasize ongoing actions and temporary situations. Include a discussion of sentence structure and provide complex examples that reflect realistic academic contexts.

5. Consider a scenario in which a technology company is announcing its long-term plans for artificial intelligence development. Discuss how the Future Tense using “will” can express predictions, promises, and spontaneous decisions. Then write several elaborate sentences that demonstrate these different future meanings in a formal announcement.
